(Chana Masala) Spiced Chickpeas in Sauce

Ingredients

1-1/2 cup dried chickpeas

2 teaspoons oil

1 teaspoons cumin seed

1 teaspoons turmeric

1 teaspoons red pepper salt

1 tablespoons fresh ginger root -- shredded

2 teaspoons fresh ginger root -- shredded

1 green chili -- minced

1 small tomato -- chopped

3 tablespoons lemon or lime juice

2 tablespoons cilantro

 Method 

  1. Wash the chickpeas and soak overnight.
  2. Drain. Heat oil in a nonstick saucepan.
  3. Add cumin, turmeric, red pepper and salt.
  4. Stir until cumin seeds crackle. Add chickpeas and cover with water by 2".
  5. Add 1 Tablespoon ginger, chili, and tomato. Bring to a boil.
  6. Cover and simmer for 1-1/2 to 2 hours or until the chickpeas are tender.
  7. Remove from the heat and sprinkle with lemon juice, remaining ginger, and cilantro.
